Fast-forward ten years and Cal is working for this elite military group and he is tracking a terrorist and a hacker. He later finds out that the hacker is in fact the daughter of the man that saved his life ten years ago. He tries to help her and tell her not to waste her life using her talents for bad stuff but use it for good or he would turn her in. She in her crazy mind, thinks that he has broken her heart and promises to hate him for trying to save her life. (If that don't sound crazy to you, I don't know what would)Another 10 years go by and they are living separate lifestyles, she doing a boring job and he was married then widowed and she happens to witness a murder on her way home from work and is in need of protection, her father calls in Cal to protect her and apparently they have this chemistry that I personally didn't see coming from anywhere. He has been in love with her forever and she is heart broken from 10 years ago when he tried to save her from making a bad choice..
I am just going to leave it at that because, the whole plot was stupid and too short, no build-up chemistry what so ever and a self-absorbed heroine.
I Love all the other Mackenzie books except this one

I love the MacKenzie series and buy the novellas without an afterthought. However, I felt like this one was written as such.
To begin with, there were way too many spelling and grammar mistakes. I get it, it's indie publishing, but mistaking "your" for "you're" should be a thing from the past now. And forgetting to close or open quotes, leaving comments in dialogues is bad. Didn't someone read this before it get published?
And regarding the plot and characters, the best part were the MacKenzies. Cal? He's fine, but the scene at the lagoon made me think he's kind of a creep, I did not appreciate that at all; and he was kind of an ass to Evie and expects her to forgive everything without his even apologizing? And what about his wife? His ten-year gap? We get nothing on him whatsoever. I didn't dislike him as a character, I sort of got no vibe from him whatsoever because I never got to see him as a developed person.
Evangeline, I felt sorry for. She's been screwed over by the man she loved, although I'm kind of tired of women in their thirties (!) who've only read romance novels and had sex with the one man. Please. I get that she's meant to find in Cal the only man she's ever loved, but why deprive her of having a fulfilled sexual life as well? I don't know, it's just getting way too cliché and I couldn't be bothered with these two characters. I'm not even going to get into how little closure readers have regarding Evie's future work plans or what she was setting up.
That's not to say I'm not looking forward to Shane's story - Shaw is already set out to be a much better character.
I think this novella is overpriced, it's in no way up to Liliana Hart's standards.
This story is about an assassin who is after Evangeline Lockwood because she witnessed an assassination. Taber leaves no loose ends and that is what she is. Former CIA director Lockheed calls McKenzie Securities to protect his daughter and Declan sends his techno agent and family friend of the Lockheed's, Cal Colter. Cal and Evangeline are techo-wiz competitors. It is going to be very hard for Evie to get along with Cal. But they do and both want to see the future together.
Now for the incomplete details
1) In the past, after Cal threatened Evie with ratting on her to the cops, he literally tied her hands in the computer world. but she says she was better than him in the present and she has stealthy entered this world again. What is she doing? What is her moniker?
2) When Taber had her cornered in the rocks under a torrential downpour and she was returning fire, she had a moment of clarity and fired point blank at Taber. Did he get hit, die escaped? It was not explained.
3). How is Cal going to convince Declan to hire Evangeline? Nothing more was mentioned.
4). What was the conspiracy to kill about? To get rid of the competition to what?
I so looking forward to this book. But I was kinda disappointed. First of all it was too short. Cal and Evie had such spark between when they disagreed, I wanted more of that. I wanted her to make him Beg. Second There wasn't enough sex scenes for this couple. Third there was no suspense up to when the killer came for Evie.. I thought these agents were supposed to be the best.. you trust a phone call and not back up what was said on the phone call with thermal maps of the restaurant or a picture for proof of enemy. They have ever known form of technology. Cal is a computer hacker he couldnt hack into the restaurants security cameras to get intel. No Cal and Max just say they are on their way. Think people.. take out the muscle and bad guys come. Jade should of asked more questions and thought why didn't my husband call to tell me he was sending back up. Those last scenes didn't make sense. This book lacked the steamy scenes and suspense the other books had. I can't wait for Shane's book..
Usually love anything in this series but this story was a disappointment. It had so much potential but, the story ended so abruptly it felt like she left half of it out. I was like other reviewers and went back to see if I was missing pages. Is it a cliff hanger, did she just lose interest in telling the story, what? Hopefully we will get a full, complete story when Shane's book comes out.
