Awaken Awakened Fate Volume 1 Skye Malone Books

Its ok. Truthfully I like the mystery but the writing leaves much to be desired.

Chloe is a seemingly average girl with strange parents. They forbid any drawing, thinking or, God forbid, going to the ocean. So when Chloe gets an invitation to her best friends beach house she has to sneak off to go. So Chloe is drawn to the ocean and her parents stay away from it, why? Her best friend's stepbrother is hot and acts like he knows something but what? People are trying to kidnap her, a guy with glowing eyes keeps trying to talk to her, and strange things are happening above and beneath the water. These are the questions and mysteries that keep me reading.

So what makes me want to stop? For one, the overuse of words. If I had a nickel for every time a character "grimaced" or "winced" I could buy a thesaurus which is what the author should invest in. Is there any other way to describe the passing of time besides a heartbeat? Chloe has a crush on Noah but there's no hint or foreshadowing of his feelings so that when anything does happen between them it seems sort of out of the blue. It left me saying, "Wait where did that come from?" I was annoyed that Baylie was cast as a best friend when she was the furthest out of the loop. How could her and Chloe be best friends when Chloe kept everything from her? At times the story moved too slowly but there is another POV besides Chloe's which sheds some light on what's going on and helps move the story along.

Basically the writing is stunted and flat but the plot thickens and the questions I have keep me reading.

Awaken Awakened Fate Volume 1 Skye Malone Books Reviews

OK, I now officially love mermaids. Skye Malone opens you up to a whole new world surrounding mermaids. I love it when an author can surprise me with unexpected twists and turns that make the story that much better. Malone is truly a talented author. She gives us just enough to always want to know more. I can't wait to read Descend, book two, but first you mustn't pass this book up. Its really an exceptional story.
This "book" is a great sample for a book. It just stops in the middle, and you have to BUY the rest of the book.

When I get something like this as a sample, I think the author is smart. You get enough to know if you really want to read the book. I've bought a number of books from authors who do that.

But when I get what I think is a book and it turns out to be half a book, I feel betrayed and tricked by the author. It inspires me to never want to buy books from that author, ever again.
I gave this book 3 stars since the plot is really interesting, but it is a hard to read due to grammar. I did enjoy the story line; however, I will not be reading the rest of the series, since I had to reread many paragraphs, due to being confused.
Chloe Kowalski lives in Kansas, but she has an obsession with the ocean which she can’t explain. To complicate matters, her parents have an almost insane aversion to water, and won’t even let her learn to swim. One summer, she runs away—although, it’s not her intent to run away, she just wants to see the ocean, so she sneaks off with her best friend to her blended family’s home on the coast.
Once there, though, strange things begin to happen. Her attraction to the ocean grows stronger, and one day, while out for a boat ride, the ocean acts up and the vessel capsizes. Underwater, Chloe sees a strange boy, and finds that she can talk to him; underwater. Then, she’s attacked in a bookstore by a clerk acting mad, and soon she learns that a band of killers are after her. Her only way to survive is to come to grips with what she really is, a mixture of human and mermaid.
Awaken by Skye Malone is a riveting paranormal tale that explores the intersection of the human world and the world of the inhabitants under the sea, and the conflicts that plague both. The characters, human and nonhuman, are rich in detail and motivation, and the action is nonstop. I only had one gripe about the story, a point of logic; while Chloe’s parents have gone to great lengths to conceal her heritage by keeping her away from water, it’s not explained how they dealt with bathing, drinking, or mundane tasks like washing dishes. This small point notwithstanding, it was still an entertaining story.
In the realm of realistic fantasy, Sky Malone weaves a tale of a young girl desperately wanting to get to the ocean, which her parents forbid. Chloe, however, cannot take the longing for the ocean anymore. She goes on vacation with her best friend, unbeknownst to her parents. She soon begins to realize there was a reason why her parents did not want her near the ocean. In more than one way, her life is threatened. The story also, in my mind, mimics the struggles of children transforming into young adults.

In all honestly, fantasy books are not a genre I typically read, and I actually shy away from them. Skye hooked me from the first line…”Before we go any farther, I want to make one thing clear I never intended to run away.” It is well written, without any typos. The pace moves along nicely in the beginning; not too fast, not too slow. By the middle, though, it the pace becomes faster. It was a sure page turner for me! I give this a 5 Star Rating. This is a very interesting story about Mermaids. I enjoyed the world of the mermen, it was different from many of the books I have read. They even have a heretical sect that is out causing problems.

The book had pretty good pacing. The characters were good, but I didn't relate of connect to them at all. I felt more like an outsider watching the events rather than caught up in the book. Even though I didn't connect, this is a solid book with a lot of things to recommend it.

It looks as if there may be a love triangle. The potential is there, even though there wasn't much romance in this book. The story is more about Chloe learning of the heritage that has been hidden from her. This story felt like an introduction for events to come. That makes sense, because it leaves the reader hanging with Chloe's life hanging in the balance.

Overall, this is a cute book written for teens. There is mild swearing and some violence.
Its ok. Truthfully I like the mystery but the writing leaves much to be desired.
