On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Liked the setting, found the characters interesting, read it as often as I could to get to the end and see how things turned out. So, it passes the basic test of a book in engaging and holding my interest.

But would I recommend this book to others? That depends. Does the mention of Wakanda or the blue area of the moon stir childhood memories within you? Have you whiled away hours watching blaxploitation films? Does the close proximity of the words "Mirror, Mirror" and "goatee" make you instantly think of Star Trek?

If you answered no to those questions, then, no, I don't recommend the book to you. Like many of the 1 and 2 star reviews on this site, you will not like this book for those very reasons. This book makes references, lots of references, to very specific corners of pop culture. If you get them, you'll likely love this book.

As someone who does love this book, I still have some problems. At a certain point, I just had to accept that this was a world in which everyone, male, female, black, white, old, young, straight, gay, somehow magically collected the same pop cultural touchstones and felt free to reference them ad nauseam. Sometimes it's clever, sometimes it's written beautifully, but at many points it simply doesn't ring true. I find it had to believe that a current teenager would know that Black Panther is from Wakanda, and that the blue area of the moon is where the Inhumans lived (or rather, did in the 80s and 90s), because that's the only spot on the moon that has oxygen. And the Watcher, but he's okay with having neighbors as long as they leave him alone.

See there? I just confused almost everyone reading this review. Now you know how the book will make you feel. If you're okay with that, or you actually understood what I was talking about, then by all means buy it. I think you'll enjoy it.

. . . That having been said, as the new cliche goes, a f fine novel, great story line. Best appreciated by boomers who have spent some time during the sixties and seventies in the SF Bay Area, who appreciate vinyl records, and who have some knowledge and appreciation of jazz, since these elements form the backdrop to and provide many of the essentials of the story. These references are not explained -- "you hadda be there" to get much of the story's color and detail.
This is not the easiest book to conquer, the heart of the story could have been told in a much shorter book but would it be as good? Definitely not. It is important you dig deep into these characters, that you feel their joy, pain and hopes and dreams. That you care. This book plays out just like the jazz records that fill the used record store that the story revolves around. The descriptions and dialogue seem to form a musical background that make the story almost dance and sing I might get roasted for saying this but The authors descriptions and dialogue remind me of Charles Dickens.
I have enjoyed so many of Chabon's novels, and particularly, "The Yiddish Policemen's Union," which I loved. It is indeed a great American novel. The problem with the writing in "Telegraph Avenue," is that Chabon never met a metaphor or a simile that he couldn't invent--at least two in EVERY sentence. No one is expecting a Grisham-like entertainment from him, but the writing in this novel is strained and self-conscious. The last quarter, if you can reach that point, is more straightforward, but by then, one really doesn't care much. We already know Chabon is the cleverest kid in the class. No need to hammer us over the head with it!
This was a disappointment. It was very difficult to get into, sometimes difficult to even read. Section III, Chabon's 12 page long sentence, typified the problem with the book. Any semblance of plot and character development was obfuscated by his zany, run-on, manic-tangential style. Only two people in our reading book group were motivated to read much of it; the most common reaction was that it was too difficult to read (from teachers who read a lot). Chabon is funny and can write great books. I loved the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, but Chabon lost his way on Telegraph Avenue.
